Tragedy often has a way of visiting those who can bear it least. This is what has happened in Haiti. At 4:53 PM on January 12, an earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale hit a point 15 miles southwest of the capital, Port-au-Prince. Though the death toll is still unknown, the scale of the tragedy is apparent — a nation that was already on its knees has been knocked to the ground. Now a new book from TIME reports on the earthquake, the devastation it left behind and the struggle to save lives and put a shattered world back together.

Combining stories of tragedy and chaos, heroism and hope, it offers a powerful account of one terrible day and the difficult days that followed. In a personal essay, former President Bill Clinton—who also serves as UN Special Envoy to Haiti—also offers his assessment of Haiti’s most urgent needs. Additionally, author Amy Wilentz (Rainy Season: Haiti Since Duvalier) offers her reflections on the country she has visited many times.

TIME will donate a share of all proceeds from this book to Haitian relief efforts.
